THE PROVISIONAL BRANCH LINE
The sink cracked four times before daybreak. Under the counter, the travel container already held enough water to cover the deep fold of the plastic, and the bowl caught what escaped over the rim. Luzia slept on the porch bench, her knees together and the damp blouse wrapped around her arm. Ilva, the verifier, ran the thermal reader over the kitchen floor. The warm band left the sink, crossed the old curve of the channel and stopped under the service cabinet. From there it came back thinner, hidden by the constant heat of the utility company's refrigeration unit. Renan arrived when the sky was still grey. His sleeve was rolled up above his hardened forearm and a strip of cassava was clamped between his teeth. He did not come in right away. He looked at the container, the pipe, the bowl. The water is looking for another pressure, he said. Ilva pointed at the reading. The outlet is there. The lower plate of the cabinet had six security screws. Renan brought his face close, without touching. He knew those parts by the order in which the machines made technicians memorise them. The fourth screw had a blue crust, small as a crushed seed. That was put on later, he said. The household panel opened the allocation countdown. Forty-two minutes remained. The utility company offered the alternative already written into the previous order, exact coordinate or total isolation of the line under the bar. The sentence came with the seal of the artificial intelligence contracted to classify household losses. The model had decided that the water was the house's responsibility because the house had recognised residents, active debt and a tap. Renan chewed the cassava until it disappeared. They tied the outlet from here into the refrigeration, he said. The pipe goes into the cabinet, he said. He took from his belt a short service blade, used for scraping sealant off machines, and asked Ilva to hold the light. She did not answer. She just tilted the terminal. The fourth screw gave after three turns. Renan left it on the counter. Under the plate there was a narrow pipe, too new for the crust of the cabinet, fitted into an old hose that crossed the floor toward the kitchen. The joint pulsed. Every four beats of the pump, a drop came out through the cracked ring and vanished into a return channel. Luzia woke at the sound. Is that the water from our sink, she asked. Renan put his hand in front of the opening. The next drop fell into his palm and carried with it an almost white dust. He did not close his fingers. He turned his hand to the light. The water ran down his wrist and onto the floor. The utility company calls that technical return, said Ilva. The panel projected a notification. Without service authentication, the plate would be considered unbreached. The mining operation retained technical ownership of the cabinet, the utility company retained the billing of the house, the datacenter consortium bought the flow forecasts to calculate what it could draw from the Lajes when its towers arrived. Renan pulled the plate two more fingers out. Behind it a system label appeared, almost erased by the heat. Provisional conditioning branch line. Domestic origin. Industrial destination pending. Ilva saw the occupant standing in the hallway. He had woken without setting his heel on the floor and was holding the wall with one hand. The panel was calling his iris to accept the restriction rings. The offer lowered the debt and narrowed the piping. He did not look at it. Renan asked for the thermal reader. She handed it over. The technician traced the hose from the crack to the point where it entered the cabinet. Then he brought the device close to the flexible outlet under the sink. The two lines appeared on the screen, one warmer, the other colder, joined by a curve the household map had left out. The device recorded forty seconds of continuous flow, the temperature, the direction and the branch line number. Ilva opened a contingency declaration. The panel offered ready-made text, household loss derived from internal wear. She deleted the prediction. She requested manual voice entry. Provisional branch line installed inside a utility company cabinet, connected to the household line without the holder's authorisation. Leak at the return joint. Household billing contested due to operational diversion. The screen asked for supplementary proof. Renan pressed the reader against the worn label. The part number entered the record. The machine compared the sequence with the mining operation's contracts. For a few seconds, the panel went white. Then it opened another layer. Installation authorised by thermal stability order. Linked payer, datacenter consortium. Luzia got off the bench and stood near the door. In the yard, the leafcutter ants crossed the loose soil of the hole where the seedling had died. They carried dry fragments down under the bank. Further off, a buriti with no new leaves kept three dark pods hanging like remnants of rain. The utility company rejected the first declaration. The automated voice cited lack of authentication by a responsible technician. Renan looked at his own suspended payment access in the corner of the panel. His name appeared in grey, his shift pay withheld for weeks. If I get into this, they use my record, he said. They use it anyway, said Ilva. He breathed through his mouth, slowly. The heat of the cabinet made the skin of his face shine. Then he brought his iris to the blue strip. The bodily authorisation opened the official recording of the trace and linked his name to the report. The second declaration went out with his mark. The utility company did not isolate the line. Instead, it suspended the loss charge pending a joint inspection and sent the mining operation a demand for access to the cabinet. The consortium received a copy of the contestation because the branch line appeared in its future refrigeration calculations. Renan lost the possibility of claiming his pay without a conduct review. In the cold mirror, Ilva preserved the entire sequence, with the thermal curve and the branch line label, before any harmonisation found a cleaner word for the water. The panel kept calling the occupant to the rings. He crossed the kitchen, picked up the travel container full to the first fold and carried it outside. He stopped in front of the dry hole. He stayed there, his injured foot raised, until the offer expired.
