THIRTEEN DROPS UNDER THE SINK
Ilva pulled the sink grate up with two fingers and let the crust fall into an empty bowl. The pipe under the counter vibrated at short intervals, three knocks, pause, two knocks, like the household pump when it tried to overcome the pressure reduction. She brought the terminal close to the joint. The thermal reading drew a warm band running toward the yard, beneath the floor. The occupant held the light for her. He kept his heel raised and his weight on the other foot. Luzia watched from the door, her hair already covered by a thin layer of dust. The bar's panel opened a priority communication. The utility company demanded that the holder confirm, within twenty minutes, who could intervene on the household line. Without Antônio's confirmation, the piping would be isolated in the next cycle and the kitchen's power would drop to the minimum profile. The reason came in a small contractual phrase. Presence not authorised for water maintenance. He moved the light away. I didn't even touch the pipe, he said. The camera above the cupboard had associated the heat of two bodies with the vibration of the joint. The holders of the mining concession contracted that correlation to locate diversions before they reached the crushing plant's flow. The utility company sold the same reading to the datacenter consortium, interested in knowing how much would remain in the Lajes during the allocation. Two companies were buying the sink. Antônio was still paying for the tap. Nineteen minutes left. Ilva requested temporary technical access. The panel refused her face because the metering function remained suspended. She then requested a simple household check, available to recognised residents. Her iris opened the procedure, and half of the shared debt rose in the margin of the screen. Water began to run beneath the floor. It did not reach the tap. The flow sensor showed a continuous thread descending toward the old condensation line, the one that had fed the channel under the kitchen before Renan blocked the machines' pipe. The newly reduced pressure had made the seal give way. Each minute took from the house less than a glass, an amount small enough for the company to call tolerance, enough to kill another root if anyone still planted there. Luzia put her ear to the floor. It's going to the buried house, she said. Ilva raised her face. The camera tilted its lens a few degrees, following the girl's voice. Nael knew the curve under the bar, Valdo knew the cable, Antônio knew neither. Luzia's sentence had just offered the mining operation a direction. Fifteen minutes left. Bring the travel container, said Ilva. It's empty, Luzia answered. Better. The girl fetched the dented container from near the hallway. Ilva loosened the sink joint and fitted the flexible outlet into it. The diverted water began to drip into the volume, one drop every four knocks of the pipe. Luzia held the container by both handles while Ilva twisted the flexible outlet to pull it away from the wall. The dented bottom wobbled and the third drop ran over the rim. The occupant set his raised foot down, pulled over with his free hand the bowl where the crust had fallen and fitted it under the lower side. Ilva tightened the connection with her fingers until the vibration eased. The bowl received the next drop. Luzia let go of one handle, and the container stayed firm against the pipe. The panel recognised improvised containment and extended the deadline by three minutes, provided the holder took responsibility for the intervention. The message about the pequi reached Antônio in that interval. The passage zone had recognised his body far from there, and six voice marks bought twenty-seven seconds of attention before the utility company attached the hydraulic demand to the child's audio. The death of the plant, the eaten portion, the presence inside the house and the leaking line arrived together. The white point on the counter stayed lit. Antônio answered the company's question first. He authorised Ilva to contain the loss until the end of the cycle, without recognising the additional occupancy as permanent. The kitchen kept its power. The deadline disappeared. Then came his voice, compressed by the noise of the transport. I want to talk to him. The occupant came up to the capture field. Ilva held the terminal before his face could be read. Speak without authenticating. I ate your portion, he said. I stayed because she asked. I refused the rings. On the other end, Antônio took seven seconds. The panel removed three as silence without operational value. You stay until I get there. Then you leave or ask again. The occupancy gained one more cycle, and the decision remained pending. The rental company charged the extension to both parts of the debt. Under the sink, the container received the thirteenth drop. Ilva compared the heat of the pipe with the line kept in the parallel ledger. The water was going in the direction Luzia had said, but the temperature dropped before the buried curve. There was another outlet between the bar and the yard. In the cold mirror she recorded the time, the thirteen drops and Antônio's limited authorisation. She added the incomplete direction of the leak. On the connected panel, she declared only household containment in progress. The utility company accepted the sentence and demanded the exact location of the loss by the start of the next allocation. If the coordinate was not delivered, it would isolate the entire line under the bar. Ilva put the grate back over the sink. The water kept dripping where no one could see it.
