THE DROP IN THE CHANNEL
The cracked ring pulsed inside the joint, opening the split every four beats of the pump. Renan fitted a pressure wrench onto the pipe and felt the vibration climb up the handle to his hardened forearm. The joint inspection had begun six minutes earlier. The utility company's envoy stayed outside the cabinet, her hair held by a protective mesh and her mouth motionless before the tracking cameras. The panel authorised visual inspection. Repair remained blocked. Renan turned the wrench an eighth of a turn. The joint creaked. If he tightened past the white mark, he would crush the old hose and the house would be billed for the rupture. If he left it as it was, the industrial branch line would keep drinking through the household line until the official part arrived. The envoy raised two fingers to stop him. Your access does not include torque, she said. My access was suspended after I found the pipe. She checked the strip projected on her wrist. The utility company had contracted her presence for twenty-nine minutes, with no paid extension. On the other side of the connection, the mining operation had granted remote observation. The datacenter consortium could reject any part that altered its future refrigeration calculations. Ilva held the thermal reader against the floor. The curve remained joined, domestic at the origin, industrial at the destination. Thirty-one minutes were left before the allocation, eleven fewer than at the first reading. Renan removed the wrench. He opened the envoy's case and found three rings, all larger than the mouth of the joint. The correct housing appeared empty, accompanied by a price eleven times higher than the last supply. The specific rubber had been reserved for acceleration equipment recently released to foreign buyers, and each distant authorisation added a charge to the hands trying to seal a sink in Buritaçu. World trade had perfected freedom until it fitted in an unavailable ring. I can shave one of these down, said Renan. The part loses certification. The water already lost it. The envoy did not answer. She moved the case closer to him, a distance sufficient to allow the work and too small to look like consent. Renan chose the thinnest ring. He clamped it in a portable vice fixed to the edge of the cabinet and passed a curved blade along the inner face. The rubber resisted the first cut, wrinkled at the second and released an uneven strip at the third. He reset the angle. The blade slipped and opened the hardened skin at the base of his index finger. The blood reached the grip. Ilva took from her pocket a piece of the strip that covered her own hand. He refused with a shake of his head, pressed the cut against his sleeve and kept going. Each turn removed less than the one before. The envoy measured the thickness through the optical field, without touching the part. Half a millimetre to go, she said. Less to go. The field doesn't accept less. Renan scraped again. The ring lost a sliver, tilted inside the vice and nearly split at the seam. He held it with his injured thumb until the rubber regained its shape. The projected price rose another fraction, now with uncertified adaptation and disposal risk added. From the porch came the smell of toasted corn. Luzia had found three kernels at the bottom of a pot and was heating them on the surface of the stove. One jumped to the floor. She declared that that one had learned to run away before learning to pop. Renan laughed for the first time since he had arrived, a short exhalation that hurt his arm more than the cut. The girl ate the other two and offered the burnt one to the envoy. She accepted it, blew off the ash and chewed without consulting anything. The interval lasted as long as the kernel. Renan lubricated the ring with a drop collected from the joint itself. He loosened the clamp while Ilva held up the hose, keeping the flow inside the channel. The pressure pushed the pipe outward. He held back the outlet with his palm, fitted the shaved rubber and turned the connection until the white mark disappeared under the metal. His hand began to shake. Another quarter, said the envoy. It'll tear. The calculation requires it. Renan steadied his wrist with his other hand and advanced only half of what was asked. The joint snapped. Everyone looked at the thermal curve. One beat, two, three. No drop appeared at the return. The industrial line cooled by three degrees while the household line kept its pressure. The envoy recorded a functional seal outside specification. The repair postponed the house's charge, but Renan's pay would remain blocked until the analysis of the adapted part. His blood on the handle was classified as tool contamination and deducted from the shift he had not yet been paid for. He wiped the wrench on his own sleeve and closed the case. At the back of the cabinet, the last drop clinging to the joint thickened, reflected the blue light and fell onto the dry channel.
