CHAPTER 105 · PREVIEW

THE BLACK THREAD

Three grains of hardened clay fell from the blade when Valdo knocked the handle against the rim of the basin. The fourth stayed caught in the slit of the metal. Nael tried to free it with his fingernail, then took the blade over to the service light coming in through the window. There was a black thread inside the clay, thin as a singed hair. Ilva stayed by the table. Her body panel projected onto her leg a news item looked up a few minutes earlier. A federal authority was proposing to expand, in another mineral region, a laboratory devoted to rare earths. The network of buyers had reacted before the public speech was over. Samples from old drilling surveys, fragments of equipment and mineral cores were already receiving offers valid for six hours. Valdo saw the price go up twice. With this I pay for one delivery, he said. Nael turned the blade. The black thread broke, leaving a glossy stain on the metal. You pay for half. Half is more than nothing. He opened the purchase query. The façade camera tried to frame the blade, but Valdo kept it below the table. The buyer accepted material with no proven origin, as long as the mineral reading indicated recoverable presence. Collection would be the next day. The value went up if the seller reported the point of extraction. Ilva closed the projection with her palm. The offer stayed lit on Valdo's skin. If you sell that leftover, they'll want the cable, she said. They already want it. They want the location. The cable comes with it. Valdo ran his tongue over his cracked lips. Three deliveries were withheld, the reservoir had been taken, and the water that once made the cheiro-verde grow up to his knee now reached the village in the truck bed of another man. The offer fit between these losses like a narrow door. He brought the blade closer to the receiver. Nael held his wrist. Valdo's injured hand trembled once. Then it went still. Let go. That black isn't from the sheathing. You saw five centimetres in the dark. I buried that. The silence shifted the heat in the kitchen. Even Ilva moved her leg away from the table. Nael took out the grain caught in the slit of the basin and crushed it between his fingers. The crust opened into a reddish dust. In the middle, the thread stayed whole. In the first drilling surveys, he explained, the team needed to mark depth without leaving expensive equipment in the ground. They ran a mineral cord alongside the cable and burned the tip every ten metres. The thread darkened, but did not rot. Afterwards they pulled it all out. When it snapped, the rest stayed. You did that, asked Valdo. I did. And where did it snap. Nael dropped the thread into the basin. For a few seconds he looked at the empty chair that he and Antônio had used as a goalpost when they still ran around behind the bar. The first refrigerator had come later, bought with the pay for an excavator driven along paths Nael had taught. It spent three nights hidden under that same table, because Antônio did not want to say where the money had come from. The motor was still on the porch, open and with no seeds, its coils exposed to the heat. At the hollow stone, answered Nael. The cable made a loop there so it wouldn't snap when the slope gave way. So the line goes to the house. It passes before it. If they pull from the bank, the loop tightens under the ground. The layer gives way first by the kitchen. Valdo drew back his hand. The offer missed a price update without his accepting it. Three hours remained until the postponement ended. Nael went out to the porch and came back carrying the back grille of the refrigerator. The copper had already been cut out in some other repair. Between two rods there was a dark cord, hardened by grease and dust, used decades before to tie down the motor during transport. It's the same, said Valdo. Nael tore off a length. The cord resisted, stretched and came away with a snap. He put it in the basin beside the residue from the blade. The two fibres were the same thickness. The news raised the value of the old samples again. Valdo cancelled the sale query. Then he separated the cord into three pieces and rubbed them in the clay from the blade. At dawn, he could scatter them at different points on the slope, far from the hollow stone. The mineral reading would find real residue, all of it older than the map, without revealing which piece went with the cable. You kept this all this time, he said. I kept the refrigerator. You kept the path inside it. Nael did not answer. He gave Valdo the largest piece, precisely the one that bore the clamp mark from the motor. With it, he also handed over the proof that he had known the route before all the maps that later pretended to discover it. Valdo pulled over the cool box, opened the warped lid and fastened the piece beneath it, holding it still. Ilva lifted the basin off the blue cloth. In the cold mirror, she added to the parallel ledger the composition of the thread, the loop at the hollow stone and three false positions not yet measured. She left blank the name of whoever had buried the cable. Valdo put the pieces away in the cool box with no strap. When he went out to the yard, he was no longer carrying the blade as merchandise. He was carrying three pasts to split a single pursuit.
