THE MAGNETIC CLIP
The mat slapped against the bank with a sound of wet leather, though there had been no rain for weeks. Valdo came in through the yard when night had already taken the dry buriti. He had clay up to his ankles and the short blade pressed against his burnt palm. Nael was by the sink, picking out the grains of corn the saúvas had dropped near the crack. Ilva, sitting on the low bench, was listening to an old message on the household channel. The voice of the man from the other city said he had seen a ripe mango at a market and remembered the skin she had described. She stopped it before the end. The audio file stayed lit on her body panel, awaiting a reply for three hours now. Valdo closed the door with his shoulder. I heard something on the road. Nael did not raise his eyes. The road has a lot of things. This one came from the refinery truckers. A county out there blocked datacenters for a year. They say they turned down a big tower because it would drink too much. Ilva left the audio suspended. The distant man stood still on the syllable of mango, caught in a mouth the network could replay as many times as it liked. And what does Buritaçu have to do with that, she asked. Valdo ran the blade along the edge of the sink. The metal let go of three black grains. The consortium here has to do with it. When they shut a door far away, they squeeze another one close by. Nael gathered the grains in his hand. Before the ducts, that sink got geckos after dark. They came looking for insects on the warm kitchen walls. Now the insects gathered at the service cabinets, where the maintenance light drew small wings until it burned them. There were nights when only ants and dust appeared. The projection came through the façade. First it lit a blue line on the floor, then opened words over the table. Territorial viability review. High priority. Deadline at first light. Ilva read it standing. The mining operation and the datacenter consortium had hired the same rental company to measure occupancy, heat, soil and passage. The notification asked for confirmation of the underground trace detected in the bank. Anyone with material knowledge should report its position. The consequence came below, clean as a washed threat. Without collaboration, expanded biological containment and recognition of occupancy closed by prediction. Nael dropped the grains. One rolled to the leg of the table. They found the cable. They found a streak of metal, said Valdo. Cable is what we know. The panel returned an incomplete image of the bank. The mat appeared as a dark strip. Under it, a blue patch pulsed at short intervals. The magnetic clip, bought with his last balance, shone at the centre of the mark. Valdo looked at his own hand. The piece called them. It called because it's new metal on old metal, said Ilva. Nael went up to the panel without offering his face. The blue light climbed the cracked sole of his sandal. For years he had taught curves the way someone teaches shortcuts for the rain. Then he watched the machines open the way, the earth turn to dust and the payment enter his body. The guilt had not grown old with him. It had only learned to walk slowly. If they open the containment on the bank, the bait gets the whole colony, he said. And if we say where the cable is, asked Ilva. They clear the slope, said Valdo. They find the hollow stone. Then they ask why the old route runs under the house. The projection added a clause. The rental company offered to close the interference attributed to Valdo if he authenticated the location of the clip and authorised a predictive reading of the terrain. The price appeared in future balance. Three deliveries deducted before there was even a delivery. Valdo laughed without opening his mouth. They want me to pay to show them where they'll bury me. Nael took the blade from his hand and laid it on the table. He did not touch the wound. He looked at the blue mark on the panel, then at the strip of night behind the yard. You're not going back there alone. You don't give orders on my way. You did before. The sentence hung between them. Valdo raised his head. The film on his neck pulled up a corner, revealing the red line that still would not close. Before, you got paid for taking me where I didn't know how to go. Nael rested his fingers on the back of the empty chair. The wood had dry earth on its legs, left from the day it served as a bridge for the larvae. And you got paid for selling water to the people who planted with me. Ilva closed the distant man's audio. The small interruption produced a notification of incomplete listening. She left it pulsing beside Valdo's charge. The council of the distant county could halt its buildings for a year, said the rumour that had come along the road. In Buritaçu, news like that turned into acceleration. The place that refused the tower kept its waiting. The valley got the deadline. Nael pulled the chair up to the table. We don't show the cable. Valdo stared at the screen. And do what. Ilva opened the low kitchen cupboard, took out the metal basin and set it in front of him. Under it, the blue cloth hid the cold mirror. She did not lift the basin. She only touched two fingers to the rim. You show them something else. Valdo waited. The clip, she said. Say you found an abandoned drainage line and fastened the mat to steer the containment away from the house. Don't mention a cable. Don't mention a stone. Ask for an in-person review. They'll charge. They already have. Nael nodded once. The agreement cost him the chance of keeping the bank off any map. It cost Valdo three deliveries that might never come. Even so, the prediction needed an answer to close the night. Valdo put his thumb on the projection. The bodily authentication recognised the injured skin, opened the declaration field and waited for a voice. He spoke quietly. Clip installed to guide a colony. Underground trace unknown. I request human presence. The panel accepted the first part. On the second, it took too long. Review received, the façade reported. Containment postponed for four hours. Delivery balance withheld pending verification. Valdo took his hand away. Nael went to the door and listened to the bank. The mat was still slapping in the dark. Beneath it, the saúvas were carrying the queen into an earth the company had just bought in hours.
