THE FOLD IN THE BEND
Thirty-seven minutes remaining, the street panel lit up as Antônio reached Ilva's house. Edna came behind him, the copper clip shut in her hand. The notice called no one by name. It demanded that the removed material be presented and stated the consequence: at the end of the deadline the bar's protection would be withdrawn and the water used since the repair would come back as irregular benefit. The door was ajar. Inside, the smell of reheated pequi filled the small room, mixed with the dust that came in through the louvred shutter. Ilva was sorting grains of corn in a digital weighing basin, picking out the stones by their dry sound against the bottom. The band on her leg showed beneath the hem of her clothes. Nael was asleep in a hammock by the porch, his bad knee bent in a way that found no rest. Antônio stopped in front of the table. The bend is in your bag, said Edna. Ilva looked at the two of them, then at the canvas bag hanging on the back of the chair. The cold mirror had been in there since she left the bar. She pulled the fastener, moved aside a short wrench, a folded cloth, the container attached to the protective band. The copper bend appeared last, wrapped in the fabric Edna had used to carry the spoon. For a few seconds, no one touched the part. The bend was the size of a closed hand. One side bore the dark mark of the thermal cut, the other kept a line of old grease, come from the bar's kitchen. Antônio knew it before he picked it up. He had cleaned that bend with fine sand for years, when the refrigerator still blew a less hot air over the bottles. It was you, he said. Edna lowered her head. I put it there before I went to the cabin. Ilva ran the cloth over the part. The copper left a green stain on her fingers. Nael opened his eyes in the hammock, heard the voices and sat up slowly. From the yard came the noise of the cicadas, irregular since the pit had advanced over the strip of buritis. There was less shade on the ground, fewer insects clinging to the broad leaves. The rare earth mine ate the water from below and left the cerrado learning to dry out standing. Antônio picked up the bend. If I take this, they take the whole refrigerator. Edna said, It has the mark of the cut. The sentence did not lessen the weight of the metal. The man from the mining operation had said that any copper used in the repair now belonged to the incorporated infrastructure. Ilva went back to the basin of corn. She picked out three more stones. Ilva said, Leave the metal here. The street panel dropped a minute. The light crossed the window and scored the wall of hardened clay, where a service duct climbed, held by screws. Nael got up from the hammock, resting his hand on the door frame. There's a fold in the bend, he said. On the inside. Antônio turned the copper over. The fold was small, almost erased by the heat. That was when we put in the refrigerator, said Nael. Me and you. The motor drew too much water. We made the bend so it would drink from the branch, not from the sink. Antônio looked at his friend. Nael had driven machines along routes that today ended in living fence. Part of that money had bought the refrigerator. Part had stayed buried under every pipe the mining operation was now incorporating. You remembered that, asked Antônio. I remember because it burned my leg, answered Nael. Edna brought her face close to the bend. The fold mark indicated that the part had not been taken from a utility company duct. It came from a domestic adaptation older than the current map. The outside notice wanted material presence, wanted a proof that would fit on the screen. They had something worse for the mining operation, a memory spoken by the one who had put the pipe in place. The deadline fell to twenty-nine minutes. Antônio reached into his apron pocket and found the copper sliver he had picked up from the grate. He put the sliver on the table, near the bend. The two pieces did not fit together, but they belonged to the same metal, the same refrigerator, the same payment Nael had received for opening ground for the mine. Ilva served the corn into three bowls. Nael received the first. Antônio stayed standing, the bend in his palm. Edna ate two quick spoonfuls, watching the door. No one offered her food again. Time had already begun to charge for the way back. Outside, a gecko crossed the hot ground and vanished behind the service cabinet. Antônio wrapped the bend in the cloth and went out first. Edna went after him. Nael stayed in the doorway, counting the steps of the two of them until the street ran out.
