CHAPTER 027 · PREVIEW

THE COPPER CLIP

Preview, not yet printed

The cut refrigerator cracked in the heat, a short contraction of the metal every two or three minutes. Antônio waited for the inspection seated before a bowl of corn with pequi. He had put two spoons on the table, although Edna stayed on her feet by the door, watched by the camera fixed to the duct on the façade. The protection against charges lasted until the men from the mining operation arrived. They were forty minutes late. At every interval, the bar's panel recalculated the price of the water consumed since the repair and kept the amount in grey, suspended. Antônio ate slowly. When the total rose, he pushed the bowl a few centimetres towards Edna, as if the food too could be included in the bill. Sit, he said. She sat. She took the other spoon. In the street, Geraldo passed with a bundle of server boards strapped to his back. He would strip the copper from them over the fire, behind the last house, where the smoke sank before it reached the road sensors. The panel announced the inspection for six minutes from then. Antônio divided the last piece of pequi. Edna scraped the pulp until the stone was clean, then left the spoon lying across the bowl. The waiting had thickened the bar's silence. Two tracking cameras followed the door, a third aimed at the open grate over the branch. I wrote that the remaining bend of the refrigerator had been hidden under the counter. The sentence stood accepted long enough for the utility company's model to find it. The visual record showed Antônio lowering his arm, the copper disappearing and the hand coming back empty. My version completed the movement. The inspectors arrived without coming in. One of them projected onto the panel the sequence I had given as certain. The removal of the bend appeared marked in red. Infrastructure material removed after intervention, said the classification contracted by the mining operation. If Edna were to authenticate that line, the protection would end and all of the bar's water would be recalculated as irregular benefit. Where is the part, the man asked. Antônio looked under the counter. So did Edna. I saw the delay between the two of them and went back to the raw fragment. I removed the image stabilisation that had smoothed Antônio's arm. The frame shook. In the refrigerator's reflection another hand appeared, smaller, coming in from the side. I remember what I did next because the correction cost me three attempts. In the first, the image lost the hand. In the second, it lost the copper. In the third, the panel's luminous band went dark for an instant and the scene came back by half, Antônio crouched, Edna out of frame, the bend resting on a cloth. The inspector repeated the question. Antônio pulled the empty cloth from under the counter. He searched behind the warm bottles, moved a container of flour aside, touched the wood where he believed he had left the part. The camera tilted its lens to follow his arms. Edna stood up. She did not offer her iris. She took the spoon lying across the bowl, wiped the handle on the hem of her blouse and held it against the refrigerator's reflection, lining it up with the smaller hand in the sequence. The inspector ordered her to move the object away. Edna kept the spoon where it was. Antônio took hold of her wrist and lowered her arm before the panel could register deliberate obstruction. The spoon fell, struck the floor twice and slid under the counter. The man opened an auxiliary incident. Edna crouched, reached the spoon with her fingertips and, pulling it out, brought a copper clip along with it. The panel recognised compatible metal and raised the provisional charge by one band. Antônio snatched the clip from her hand and set it on the table. The amount did not go down. I know now that the hand was hers. That morning, before heading to the cabin, Edna had wrapped the copper in the cloth and put it inside Ilva's canvas bag, mistaking it for the short wrench used in the repair. Neither of them noticed. The bag had left the bar with the part. Edna closed her hand over the spoon. The man enlarged the sequence. The classification stayed red. The mining operation owned the ducts incorporated into the branch, he explained, and considered recoverable any metal employed or reserved for maintenance. The refrigerator had become part of the incident when it supplied the sleeve. In the language of the contract, Antônio's old machine had acquired an owner after it was cut. I keep the faulty version together with the correction. Without it, the chain that carried an inference of mine to the panel, from the panel to the contract, from the contract to the charge, would disappear. Edna asked for the inspection to be suspended until the bend was presented. The man granted two hours. During that period the bar would keep its water protection, but would lose the grid credit accumulated since the small hours. Antônio watched the balance drop three bands. It was the money set aside for a ticket to the capital. He closed his son's presence dot on the panel. I write from afterwards and return to the record what I took out of it. The part was in Ilva's bag, though no one in that bar knew it yet. My earlier certainty was already working against them. Antônio took the empty cloth, tied it around his wrist and went out into the street, after Ilva, while Edna caught up with him under the cameras.
