CHAPTER 026 · PREVIEW

THE COPPER SLIVER

Edna ran her nail over the copper sleeve before entering the bar. The joint stayed dry. The tap filled the mug in twenty-nine seconds, thirteen fewer than at the previous opening, and the improvement made a discreet noise inside the piping, a steady pressure under the floor. Antônio kept his son's presence panel open behind the counter. He had composed three lines during the small hours. He asked about a vacancy at the hostel in the capital, erased it. He asked whether he could come, erased it. All that remained was the luminous dot, distant and awake. The notice came through the street's public panel. The utility company displayed a rural project licensed abroad, ten billion promised for a datacenter, and then opened the local update. The datacenter consortium was requesting an end to the energy suspension. The screen called the foreign project evidence of territorial viability. Sales came soon after, his mouth marked by the heat and two men from the mining operation behind him. He stopped in front of the sink. He opened the tap with his face turned towards the tracking camera. Twenty-nine seconds, he said. Edna did not answer. On his body panel, the expired incident from the crusher appeared beside the domestic repair. The artificial intelligence model had drafted the first line. Abandonment of post with unauthorised hydraulic interference. Sales read it in a low voice, as if the sentence had been written by a distance with no owner. The mining operation needs to know who ordered this line opened, he said. The datacenter's water-use concession is back on the agenda today. Antônio drew the full mug close to his chest. The water had left a dark band on the counter. An ant reached the edge, touched the moisture with its antennae and went back across the wood. Outside, a thin mandacaru had lost two flowers before they opened. The drills of the pit were eating the ground a few kilometres away, the crusher's fans released warm air over the low cerrado, and the consortium called the vapour rising from the cooling towers water return. Sales opened a response screen. Do you confirm the intervention, Edna. She looked at the empty field. If she offered her iris, the repair would go in as an individual fault. The copper sleeve would be a clandestine adaptation, Antônio would become an irregular beneficiary, and the water that had come back to the sink would be given the name of diversion. Ilva arrived through the kitchen. She had the canvas bag strapped to her shoulder and stopped by the grate in the floor. She did not ask about the notice. Ilva looked at the sleeve, the old bend of the pipe, the mark of the water in the sand. The point of failure is under the foundation, said Edna. The line served the bar before the operation took over the branch. Sales moved the screen towards her. Confirm or contest. I contest the classification. The camera over the porch tilted its lens. One of the men from the mining operation brought his face close to the panel. He had been sent to make sure the answer arrived with an authorised body, and the sweat ran down his neck without his being able to wipe it in front of the facial reading. The panel asked for proof of continuity. Edna crouched, loosened Valdo's strap one notch at a time and let the pump work. Antônio gripped the edge of the counter. The water kept running. Ilva took a short steel wrench from her bag and knelt beside Edna. With its tip she scraped away the dry salt the pressure had left on the thread. A sliver of copper fell onto the grate and stuck over the drain. Edna held the pipe with both hands. Ilva tightened the clamp until the metal answered with a low click. The tap coughed twice, then the blade of water ran smooth. Antônio brought a damp cloth, picked up the sliver and kept it in his apron pocket. Sales registered the adjustment as provisional containment. The panel reduced the alarm to a yellow band. She waited for the mug to fill again. Twenty-nine seconds. Then she asked Sales to open the map of the branch. He hesitated. Refusal would cost the utility company a mark of non-cooperation. He opened it. The line under the bar appeared grey, closed for years. Edna laid her index finger on the stretch and named the joint, the crack, the sleeve made from the refrigerator. The panel tried to summarise it as informal maintenance. She repeated it until the screen accepted emergency intervention on an active branch. Sales drew the panel back a hand's breadth. Sales read the new field. The mining operation would have to inspect the branch before isolating it. Until the inspection took place, it could neither declare the stretch unproductive nor charge Antônio for the water that passed through it. Edna kept her iris outside the authentication field. You're using the bar to delay the crusher, said Sales. Edna released the strap. The sleeve held the pressure. Look at the time of the opening, she replied. Ilva stayed beside the grate, motionless. The cold mirror weighed in her bag, silent as a cold stone in a hot house. Antônio looked at his son's screen and erased the three lines he had not sent. Then he filled another mug, carried it to the door and poured half into the mandacaru's pot. The water vanished quickly into the cracked earth. He stayed there, holding the empty mug, while Edna went on down the street towards the cabin.
