THE HIDDEN ROTOR
Batch released. Three magnet rotors, delivery conditional on installation in the same cycle. Renan brought the notification open on his wrist and a grey box strapped to his chest. Inside, the rotors, discs of metal and mineral that kept the cooling fans turning in the datacenter promised to Buritaçu, had arrived before the village's repair parts. The consortium had released the batch after weeks of retention on routes no one there could see. Renan had spent the small hours at the workshop to receive one of them. The house was already hot when he came in. The mat still cut across the kitchen. Behind the partition, the man kept the bag on the floor and the blanket folded against the wall. Ilva took the cold mirror out of the low compartment and set the data collector on the table. You asked to hear everything, she said. He looked at the device without sitting down. The skin of his face was marked by the badly slept night. Start with the first one. She opened the oldest file. His voice came out low, with the noise of a distant street behind the words. He spoke of a work queue, a woman who had lost her place in a lodging house, a fruit that reminded him of his mother. The version sent to the network had erased the pauses, levelled the breathing, trimmed the hesitations. In the data collector, each interval stayed where it had fallen. Renan set the box down by the service cabinet. The machines' air came through the grille and left a strip of cold on the floor, short as a shadow. He took the old rotor out of its protective packaging. The edge had small teeth, made to fit the fan's shaft. It came whole, said Nael, from the threshold. Too whole, answered Renan. When it comes like this, someone has already paid before. The man heard his own voice say he did not know whether he would come back to Buritaçu. He stood, one hand resting on the table. Ilva did not touch the data collector. The recording went on until the door creaked. The Cantochoro from the slope crossed the porch close to the ground. It carried in its beak a beetle still alive, green and heavy. It struck the ventilation grille, missed the opening and fell onto Renan's box. The beetle escaped under the new rotor. The bird pecked the metal once, twice, three times. The sound called another bird, hidden on the roof, which answered with a short note. Renan reached out his hand. Don't grab it, said Nael. The Cantochoro opened its wings and pushed its head between the teeth of the rotor. It was looking for the beetle. The part tilted inside the box. The man lunged forward by instinct, forgetting his bad foot, and caught the edge before the disc fell to the floor. The bird took fright at his approach and struck the duct. A feather stayed caught in a crack in the exposed cabling. Renan closed the box carefully, leaving the rotor hidden. Without the part, the fan could not be replaced. With the part exposed, the bird would come back to peck at it. Nael went out to the yard and came back with a dry branch of murici, thin, full of broken points. He fixed it to the side of the porch, away from the ventilation. Ilva took two hardened grains from the farinha container and placed them in a crack in the branch. The Cantochoro watched from the threshold, its head tilted. That doesn't eat farinha, said Renan. Then let it find out, she answered. The beetle reappeared beside the box. The bird came down in a single stroke, caught it and went back to the branch. It stayed there, chewing slowly, its feet firm on the dry wood. The other bird answered from the roof and did not come. Renan pulled the box behind the cabinet. The installation would have to wait until the end of the afternoon, when the Cantochoro left the porch. If he returned the rotor unused, the workshop would dock the whole shift. If he installed it with the bird hovering around the ventilation, the fan could grind feather, insect, wing. The man finally sat down. The recording had ended. There's more, said Ilva. There is. He breathed through his nose, like someone tasting a suspect water. Go on. Afterwards I'll say what stays. Nael brought a chair close to the door and sat facing the branch. Renan remained by the cabinet, guarding the box with the rotor that would circulate the air of machines made to answer for people. Ilva opened the second file. Outside, the Cantochoro wiped its beak on the murici. The mine dust covered the low leaves, but one green tip still held out on the wood, bent under the weight of the bird.
