CHAPTER 124 · PREVIEW

THE STONE AND THE SCREW

The notice arrived in three fragments on the edge of the stove. Waiting fee for mining cargo. Transit adjustment. Price of portions updated at noon. Ilva read each line while she scraped the bottom of the bowl with the cracked-handled spoon. There was farinha stuck to the wood, hardened since the previous morning. The man held the sieve against the corridor ventilation. The mesh vibrated with the air coming out of the cabinet, and the ants crowded at the tear, looking for the moisture that was no longer there. Renan slept sitting against the outer wall, his head tilted onto his shoulder. His fingers stayed closed. His wrench remained on Antônio's counter, near the bowl with the six stones and the screw. The fee had gone up because buyers far away wanted metal without delay. The cargo leaving Buritaçu had come to be worth more before it reached the road. In the kitchen, this showed up in the price of the farinha Antônio still had to sell, in the corn that would arrive smaller, in the credit list the bar would receive at the end of the cycle. The mining operation called it a representation adjustment. The man took the sieve away from the ventilation for an instant. Two ants crossed the tear and reached the gutter. He followed them with his eyes, then put the mesh back. You're going to tell him, he said. Ilva kept scraping the bowl. I am. When. She turned the spoon over. The wood carried a thread of dry dough, the width of a fingernail. When I know where he is. You know where the message arrives. Antônio's presence point remained lit on the household terminal. It marked no place. It indicated only that his body was still passing through a reading zone, some stop between Buritaçu and the capital, some queue where each passenger's face yielded a stay credit to the transit company. Ilva set the bowl on the floor. The man let go of the sieve and leaned on the wall, sparing his injured foot. The dark membrane showed above the shoe held in place by old blood. I ate his portion, he said. I stayed in his house. I split his debt. You used his water on the seedling. I did. He waited for something more. Ilva wiped her thumb on the cotton strip between her fingers. You named the arrival as if it were a favour, he said. I asked you to let him know. You've left the sentence sitting there since yesterday. The ventilation let out a current of hot air against the sieve. Renan opened his eyes and took a while to recognise the kitchen. He got up slowly, passed the bowl of stones without touching it and went out into the yard. He did not ask leave. The house had learned to measure each presence, but no one there needed to count his leaving. Ilva opened Antônio's channel. The message fee showed two options. A simple delivery would use up the evening's cooking credit. The other would send the whole voice, with an image of the face and listening confirmation, for three times the price. The man came closer. Send the whole one. The kitchen goes without cooking. We eat it cold. She raised her face. His beard was fuller than in the old audios. In the audios, his voice arrived too clean, trimmed by the filter that removed breathing, coughing, delay. Here he held the edge of the table like someone holding a thing that might belong to another. You want him to accept me, he said. I want him to know before he walks through that door. Ilva selected the whole message. The terminal opened the recording field. She placed the device between the two of them, on the table where Antônio sorted the bar's orders and deleted messages to his son before sending them. The man stayed silent until the first capture signal ended. Antônio, my name doesn't have to stay at the address if you don't want it to. I got here before you because I had nowhere to go back to. I ate part of your food. I slept in your house. The water I drank went into your debt. Ilva didn't bring me in secretly. I asked to stay. If you say so, I'll leave when my foot lets me. He stopped. Ilva saw the voice field stay open. She waited. The man breathed too close to the device. The seedling died, he said. The water used on it was yours. I was here. She closed the channel before he found another sentence. The delivery went out whole. The evening cooking credit went dark in the kitchen. The stove kept only the emergency line, enough to heat a mug, not enough to cook for four. For a few seconds, the two of them looked at Antônio's presence point. The answer came before the terminal dimmed. It carried no image. The channel returned his voice with vehicle noise and a child crying in the background. I heard. Don't leave the house. I'll come back when I can. The recording ended. There was no promise of a time, nor any clean authorisation. There was a verb in the plural, narrow as the strip of shade behind the tank. The man sat on Antônio's bench. Ilva remained standing. He said not to leave, he said. He said for us not to leave. You heard. I heard. In the street, a mining truck went by slowly, dragging dust up to the porch. The cargo's new value had opened priority for it. Behind, Valdo waited with the water vehicle stopped at the corner, the missing reservoir making the truck bed smaller than the shadow it cast. Ilva took the stones from the bowl and put five in the low compartment of the kitchen. She left the smallest on the table. The screw stayed beside it. The man pulled the empty bowl close to his feet. What do we eat, he asked. She looked at the unlit stove. Farinha with water. There's not much. There's enough for today. He nodded. Then he reached for the sieve and went back to the corridor. The mesh was warm. Ilva stayed in the kitchen, listening to the small noise of the ants under the sheet, while the smallest stone spun once on the table and stopped beside the screw.
