CHAPTER 075 · PREVIEW

THE SON'S BOWL

The ball struck the leg of the table twice and stopped. Nael had already crossed the yard, carrying four seeds in his pocket, when Antônio gathered the two cracked ones and lined them up on the counter. The inspection still had no time. On the closed visor, an amber band pulsed every fifteen minutes, in-person presence pending, as if waiting were an activity supplied by the bar. Ilva stayed in the kitchen. Antônio's house began behind a thermal curtain fixed across the opening, past the storeroom, where the adobe held the heat taken in during the day. There was a narrow bed, a dry washbasin and a shelf with three bowls. Over the third, turned upside down, the son's presence lit and went out on the domestic surface. Antônio placed one of the seeds inside the bowl. That isn't corn, she said. If they ask, it's yard stock. Your yard ends at the wall. It used to end past the refrigerator. He opened the preserved food compartment. Six portions remained, sealed since the delivery of the panels. He chose the smallest, broke the film and poured the dry grains around the seed. The preservation of that content would expire before dawn. The visor recognised exposed food, but he covered the projection with the leather ball. Now there's corn, he said. And tomorrow there's one meal less. Today too. They sat on the floor, one on each side of the curtain. The bar was visible through the opening, empty workbench, unused stove, refrigerator under the porch. On the house side, the son's bowl waited between the two of them. Antônio separated the broken grains from the whole ones. He made piles of five, undid them at the fourth, started again. Ilva recognised that delay. In the refrigerated room where she had been trained, they made candidates repeat a measurement when someone needed to decide for them. The doubt lasted until the body accepted the company's choice as its own. Here the heat stripped all elegance from postponement. Antônio's shirt darkened at the back, then at the chest, then under the arms. The luminous presence lit again. You got an answer, she said. I got presence. You didn't open it. He pushed the bowl towards her. The point of light slid over the grains and reached the cracked seed. There were nine messages composed in the domestic directory, all interrupted before sending. Ilva saw only the durations. Eleven seconds, twenty-eight, six, forty-three. The last reached a minute and ended where the explanation of the lost journey would have begun. Antônio touched the rim of the bowl with his less injured fingers. I said I was going to bring food. I deleted it because I didn't. I said I'd managed to get a ticket. I deleted it because I lost it. I said he could come back whenever he wanted. That one you sent. He moved three grains aside. He can't. The word stayed between the bed and the storeroom. Outside, a tracking camera turned to follow someone in the street. Inside the house, the domestic pickup kept an opaque light near the ceiling. Antônio moved the bowl out of its reach and placed it under the bed. The son's presence vanished from the surface. Ilva bent down with difficulty and pulled the terminal against her belly. She opened the audited channel of the man in another city. The question about her leg was still held in review, but there was a more recent message, with seven seconds of silence before he said he would wait. She had not answered yet. The file showed four interrupted attempts. Antônio looked at the durations, without asking for the content. You delete too. She put the terminal away. Less than you. Faster. The amber band pulsed again in the bar. The inspection did not come. The open corn was losing preservation while the false offer acquired a smell, a dry odour of heated grain that anyone at the door would recognise. Antônio took the second seed, pressed the crack with his fingernail and split the husk. The inside was dark in one half. In the other, a yellow band held out. He divided the clean part. He handed a sliver to Ilva and put the other in his mouth. They chewed slowly, for the roughness and for the price. The seed would serve the inspection less after this. It served the two of them. She pulled the bowl out from under the bed. The son's point of light reappeared among the grains. Send the message about the lost ticket, she said. It doesn't explain anything. Then send it without explaining. Antônio opened the forty-three second stretch. His own voice came out low, saying he had reached the shelter, that he had tried to go on, that he had come back with the food untouched. Before the last sentence, he paused the playback. He offered the access to Ilva. If I send it, you won't delete it. If you send it, it'll look like I asked for help. You did. He left his hand open. She brought the terminal close, and the two devices recognised the transfer between presences. The message passed into her temporary keeping, unsent. Antônio lost the power to delete it on his own. Ilva received the obligation to deliver it when he said so, or when the waiting cost another journey. In the bar, the amber band pulsed once more. Neither of them got up. Antônio covered the bowl with the ball to hide the light from the pickup and spoke close to the floor. If he answers, don't listen before me.
