CHAPTER 047 · PREVIEW

TWO MEASURES OF WATER

That bowl comes last, said Antônio. Nael had already brought his spoon close. He stopped before touching the thin angu, whose surface trembled with the rotation of the service cabinet outside. There were four bowls on the table and three people in the kitchen. The fourth, smaller, held Célia's portion for the climb to the Lajes. Ilva closed the pot. Célia had not come back yet. The rule demanded waiting. It'll go cold, said Nael. It's already cold. Antônio shared out the rest. Two ladles for Nael, one and a half for Ilva, one for himself. He scraped the bottom and found only a yellow film. The debt of five units remained projected in the bar room, beyond the closed door, but it did not enter the kitchen. In there, the measure was another. On the whitewashed wall, above the washtub, the new screws held the condensation cartridge delivered before dawn. The freight route had brought it three days ahead of the announced window. One tube rose to the refrigerated cabinet, another ran down to a transparent reservoir, narrow as an adult's shin. The fins vibrated. The Consortium called it a domestic demonstration, though no part of the machine served the house. In the week the owners of the intelligence admitted they had known about the risk for years, the operation sped up the equipment that let them keep profiting from it. Antônio ate a spoonful. Then another. He was in the habit of waiting for the others to finish, but that morning he needed to record a message to his son before the son's presence disappeared from the panel. The first sentence had been ready for four days. I'll come if you want to see me. The others he deleted before saying them. The machine clicked. A drop appeared in the tube and ran down to the reservoir. The three of them followed its fall. Another came almost a minute later. Nael pressed his knee against the table and made the wood creak. When will that fill up, he asked. Antônio looked at the scale printed into the container's own material. If it kept that pace, it would reach one glass after two days. The cartridge would consume energy the whole time. The water collected would receive a sanitary block, available only to recirculate in the cooling. Ilva lifted the lid of the pot and ran the spoon along the bottom. She gathered what had stayed stuck to the sides, half a thick ladle, and set it in the reserved bowl. Antônio watched. So did Nael. Célia may be a while, said Antônio. She may. And we're here. She's going on foot. He pulled the smaller bowl close to himself. The custom of the house did not provide for food kept for someone who had chosen a longer path. It provided for absence, burial, late shift, missed transport. Nael ate slowly. Between one spoonful and the next, he looked at the fourth portion. Years before, he and Antônio used to share the pot after the game, with mud from the dry field on their legs. The first refrigerator waited in the corner, newly bought with excavator money. Six bowls fitted at that table. Then came the buried sensors, the luminous fence and the rare earth magnets meant for the machines that calculated where digging was still worth it. The field lost its players before it lost its grass. Now three low clumps grew there, covered in the pale dust of the pit. A pair of moths had landed on them during the night. By morning, only one was still stuck to the stem, its wings glued by a thin crust. The reservoir received the third drop. Antônio stood and opened the domestic compartment built into the wall. He took out a travel container, dented on one side, and placed it beside his own bowl. Ilva recognised the size. It held water for half the journey to the capital. Going today, she asked. He did not answer. He poured into the container two measures of the water set aside for cooking. The inner line rose less than a finger. Nael set down his spoon. That's for dinner. Antônio poured again. The line reached two fingers. Enough remained in the common jug to wet the bottom of the pot and prepare a smaller portion at night. The kitchen held up under the noise of the fins. Ilva moved Célia's bowl closer to the stove, where the residual heat would slow the hardening. Nael took his own bowl to the sink and ran two fingers around the inside, gathering the angu that was left. He did not use water. Antônio sealed the travel container. Before putting it away, he took out one measure and returned it to the common jug. Just one, he said. It was Nael's share in the decision, though Nael had not asked. The former miner turned his face to the yard. The moth still stuck to the stem opened one wing. The other stayed motionless under the dust. The cartridge gave a low alert. The reservoir had detected contents. On the bar panel, the demonstration was now listed as active, and the five-year term began to run. Antônio left the travel container on the table. The fourth bowl stayed by the stove. When Célia came back, she would find food. When his son lit up his presence, perhaps he would find his father on the way. Outside, a new pipe was waiting to be fixed to the kitchen wall. The installer would come the next morning to go through the whitewash and connect the heat of the house to the Consortium's archive.
