CHAPTER 024 · PREVIEW

THE CRACKED SEAL

Antônio's ice tray had six empty cavities and two still holding cloudy water, already shapeless. He tilted it over the bar counter and reckoned with his finger what he could sell before the heat ate the rest. The new charge appeared on the establishment's balance strip. Residential protection, it said, and it drew credit from every unit connected to the grid so that the refrigerated expansion would not land whole on the households' bills. Antônio closed the projection with his palm. Edna came in through the porch, the dust of the cabin on her knees. Her shirt clung to her back. Since Mariana had left, she had spent hours by the pumps, opening and closing the passage in small fractions, listening to motors that gave her only the same noise as before. There's a line buried under the bar, she said. Antônio looked at the tray. There's a lot buried under this bar. The seal might be drawing air through there. He knew the old piping. The bar's first refrigerator had been installed when Nael still drove an excavator by the metre of ground delivered, and the water for the condenser came from a branch made behind the kitchen. Then the mining operation took over the line, installed meters and declared the stretch unproductive. Antônio had kept the memory of the bend because once a year he had to call someone to clear the grease and sand from the pipe that was left. I'm not digging so you can open one more bill, he said. Edna set a short piece of rubber on the counter, taken from the pump housing. Its edge had a deep bite, as if the metal had chewed it for months. If I find where the air gets in, the pump holds pressure again. If I don't, the village spends the night with dry pipes. Antônio took one of the two pieces of ice and wrapped it in a cloth. The cube was water bought from Valdo, hauled by truck, frozen with energy that now paid for its own protection. He kept that ice for the cough of whoever reached the bar too late. He pressed the cloth against his wrist and felt the cold vanish quickly. You'll owe me for this, he said. Edna nodded. The debt was given neither a name nor a deadline. At the back, the kitchen kept its stove cold and a sink without shine. The tap opened under Antônio's hand and produced hot air, then a thread that died before it touched the drain. He moved a crate of provisions aside, pulled up the floor grate and found the access cover, crusted with hardened sand. Edna knelt. The old scar over her left eye lost its colour when she strained at the latch. Adair passed in the street, Adair who prowled the licensed polygon and knew the blue lines of the fence better than the paths of the lower village. He carried two canaries in transport compartments strapped to his chest. He did not slow his step when he heard the metal give. Beneath the grate, the old pipe ran close along the foundation. Edna touched the iced cloth to three points. At the first two, the water dissolved without leaving a mark. At the third, the cloth stayed damp and cold for longer. She ran her nail along the joint and found a fine vibration, almost imperceptible. Antônio crouched beside her. This is where Nael had the bend put in, he said. So the motor wouldn't drink from the bar's tap. Edna raised her eyes. She knew Nael had sold routes to the mine, she knew less about what he had tried to keep inside them. The mining operation changed the motor, said Antônio. Then it had the branch shut. Whoever shut it didn't know the house. She removed the corroded clamp carefully. The seal was cracked on its underside, hidden by the wall of the pipe. Air got in there and rose to the pump, making the water lose body before it reached the taps. It was a small fault, made of rubber and rust, capable of leaving a whole street waiting in front of empty containers. Edna had material for a provisional containment. She lacked a compression band, kept in the cabin, and the cabin lay beyond the licensed polygon. Antônio offered the ice cloth. That won't hold, she said. It'll hold until someone comes back. He tore the fabric in half. The iced water ran over the fingers of both of them and vanished into the sand under the grate. Edna wound the strip around the joint, tightened it with the old clamp and used the weight of her knee to keep the pressure while Antônio held the pipe. The pump answered in the distance. First a single note. Then another, lower, without the double tremor Mariana had heard before leaving. Antônio did not let go of the piping. If it opens again, you come here before you sell them a solution, he said. Edna kept compressing the strip. For the first time since she had received the rota, someone was giving her an obligation that did not fit in the shift. When the thread returned to the sink, Antônio put his hand under it, waited for his cupped palm to fill and closed the tap. Then he went out through the kitchen carrying the empty tray, towards the street where the water was beginning to arrive.
