CHAPTER 004 · PREVIEW

THE METAL BASIN

Access review initiated. The notification filled the transport's glass before the door opened, and asked Ilva for a residential destination for the passenger bound to the closed incident. The man got out first, his shirt loose over his ribs. The sample container made a small bulge under the fabric, too close to the skin. Ilva's street began after a row of low houses, each with ducts fixed to the façade and presence sensors turned towards the gates. Above the roof tiles, the sky still held the colour of ground ore. Nael was sitting on the porch, sorting the remaining pequis in a metal basin. He raised his eyes to the two of them and counted the fruits. Five, he said. There are four, Ilva replied. Then one of them ran off. The man smiled without opening his mouth. Nael pushed a pequi towards him with his foot. The fruit rolled until it stopped beside the dusty shoe. For a few seconds, nobody spoke of the road, the foam, the hidden sample. The man peeled the skin with difficulty, stained his fingers yellow and let out a short laugh when the stone resisted. It bites back, said Nael. On the gate's screen, the wait grew longer. Destination pending. External binding without authorised shelter. Ilva brought her face close to the sensor. The light ran across her forehead, down her nose, lingered in the shadow under her eyes. Shared overnight stay, she said. The gate asked for his confirmation. The man stood still, looking at the house where two glasses remained on the kitchen table, one empty, the other half full of water. If I go in, it shows up for them, he said. Your priority already shows up. He passed his palm over the reader. The panel gathered the two profiles, recalculated the occupancy of the house and released the threshold for twelve hours. From then on, his voice would be attributed to the address, his night movements would fall into Ilva's household log, any call received during the period would have two bodies available for listening. He went in carrying the sample. She came after. Nael stayed on the porch. He ate a pequi slowly, leaving the pulp caught in his teeth. When the door closed, he said to no one that the house was fuller than it looked. In the bedroom, Ilva pulled the cold mirror from under the bed. It was a field collector retired by the operation, without the radio board she had torn out years before, able to keep the parallel ledger closed inside its memory and to read what the synchronised terminals refused. The screen woke with an opaque light. No network answered. The man took the container out of his shirt. There was a circle of damp on the fabric, smaller than the palm of a hand. We should open this at the bar, he said. There are people. There's a camera at every entrance. There are people too. She fitted the container into the collector's reader. The device took seven seconds to recognise the sample. Then it displayed a broken line, another below it, both without a caption. Ilva tilted her face. She touched one of the curves. The concentration of particles rose in three peaks, separated by the exact interval at which the pump switched on. Out there, they said that in certain places the datacenters already had to account for the water they drew, as if a steam tower could learn to answer for itself after drinking a whole basin. Nael came in without knocking and stood by the door. He was carrying the empty basin. Antônio heard this at the bar, he said. He said now they put rules even on machines that are far away. Far for whom, the man asked. Nael looked at the container. Then at the hill, invisible behind the house. Antônio also said that rules are things that arrive late and ask for food. Ilva enlarged the peaks. The cold mirror offered an incomplete reading, but the difference between the first rise and the last fit entirely on the screen. She took the collector to the kitchen table. The man pulled the half-full glass and moved it away from the device. If they come in here, they take this, he said. If it stays with you, they get it on the street. He watched the window. The outside sensor blinked once, registering movement in the bedroom, then again, registering silence. Nael took the basin and placed it over the collector. The metal covered the opaque light. When I guided the machines, I hid good stone under food sacks, he said. A machine doesn't search where it thinks there's hunger. Ilva looked at the basin. The man waited. The house now had two authorised people and a sample with no destination. She dragged the line of the parallel ledger into an unfilled area and began a new entry. The collector asked for a name for the file. She did not answer. Outside, the slope Cantochoro landed on the cable above the gate. The blue light of the licensed polygon ran low through the grass, and the bird opened its chest for a single song.
