CHAPTER 093 · PREVIEW

THE GRAIN ON THE BLADE

Household collection enabled, said the notification, cut off at the edge of the panel. Separation material available for two hours. A compartment under the counter opened its slot and exposed a grey blade, thin as peeling skin. Antônio did not touch it. The shipment came from the first batch of oxides bought in advance in the south of Minas by a foreign fund, months before the new pit received full authorisation. Part of it had become high-precision magnets. Another part had reached Buritaçu as disposable blades, able to hold mineral dust and compare its composition with the archive of loads. The price fit in one portion. Valdo read it twice. The rental company was offering the collection as an alternative to charging for four deliveries. If the blade found industrial residue on his clothes, the thermal anomaly in the yard would be reclassified as contamination of external origin. The inspection would lose the right to open the ground without new authorisation. If it found excavation matter mixed in with the residue, the provisional refusal would be converted into concealment. Nael took the upturned bowl off the counter and set it mouth up. The bet was still there, though the sky had cleared without a drop. Use the shirt, he said. You were the one pulling with me. That's why. Valdo opened the two lower buttons of his shirt. In the seam there was hardened flour, dark threads and a dust that might have come from the folded lid, from the holes or from the road. The blade did not know the difference. Antônio brought the sieve with the separated grains closer. He ran his index finger over the metal and showed a row of black particles stuck to the rim. They had appeared after Valdo leaned there. If you collect from here, said Antônio, the bar goes in as the sample site. The food business was suspended. Linking the counter to the dust could prolong the inspection and keep shut the kitchen he had kept going for twenty-three years. Antônio moved the sieve a hand's width away, too close to look like refusal, far enough not to offer it. Nael held the tail of Valdo's shirt. The fold kept the weight of both men's hands from when they had pulled it off the lid. He rubbed the fabric over the bowl. Three yellow crumbs fell and one black grain. The blade responded before the panel did. The grain ran across the grey surface and stuck to the centre. Valdo breathed through his mouth. Ninety-four minutes of availability remained, time manufactured by the supplier so that every expired test would buy another. The datacenter consortium had already reserved thousands of these blades to watch for metal in the cooling circuits. In the bar there was one. The counter camera asked for the bodily origin of the sample. Valdo could offer his face and declare the shirt his own. Nael would stay out of it. The company would accept the link and compare the grain with residue from the routes the driver had covered. The buried house would stay under the earth, as long as the material matched some known load. Matches what, asked Valdo. Nael let go of the fabric. Years before, he had guided excavators along the lower curve. The dust got into his clothes, stayed in the hems after three washes and scratched the skin when the sweat dried. He knew that colour. The old drilling survey. Say it looking at the camera. I can't count as a witness. You can count as an origin. The panel heard and opened a new option. Declaration of provenance by associated participant. Nael's name appeared linked to the falsified route, to Ilva's household dependency and to the passage refused by the licensed polygon. If authenticated, the statement would shift Valdo's charge into an investigation of historical contamination. It would also hand the company the first recognised link between Nael and the buried layer. Valdo pushed the blade towards him. You gave me the short curve. It was the one you asked for. Nael touched his thumb to the rim of the bowl. The black grain stayed stuck in the centre of the blade, ringed by a rusty halo that grew as the reading advanced. Outside, the saúvas were coming down the buriti without loads. They had abandoned the pequi seedling during the night and opened another trail in the dry ground, skirting the covered spots. The analysis concluded partial compatibility with drilling tailings. An authenticated origin was missing. Antônio returned the sieve to the back of the counter. The corn scraped against the metal. None of them looked. Nael brought his face closer. The camera searched for his iris, found the pale scar under his eye and displayed the text the company had prepared. He would be responsible for declaring that the residue came from previous work. Valdo held the bowl so it would not turn. Nael authenticated. The charge for four deliveries disappeared. In its place, the company suspended the inspection of the yard and opened a liability search on the old drilling corridor. The three portions were released with no guarantee of preservation. The panel required Nael to remain available for route recognition at the end of the afternoon. He picked up the blade by its edges, folded it over the trapped grain and put it in the bowl. Then he lifted the container with both hands and walked to the back of the bar.
