CHAPTER 062 · PREVIEW

THE MARKED STONE

They're going to hold back the mineral out there, said Célia, and the datacenter here will want to show where it gets its own future from. The earth Nael removed with his wet hands came away in dark slabs, compacted by the weight of the pit above the corridor. He did not answer. During the visit, the concession left him the paths and took his speech. With each portion of clay he put behind his body, he pointed the next direction with his shoulder. Ilva followed the line he opened along the wall, where buriti roots crossed the clay and died thin, cut by the heat of the cables. Célia had heard the news on a haulage company's channel. A country that refined almost all of the heavy mineral was discussing closing exports to foreign buyers. She did not know whether the measure was a threat, an agreement or propaganda. The rumour was enough. On the utility company panel, a new band was already running above Antônio's charge. Priority territorial traceability. The datacenter consortium offered fast-track review for water intakes that proved an origin prior to the current operation. Ilva read it standing, with her hand resting on the wall. The screen asked for proof of continuity. A material mark, an authenticated person, a reading of origin. Célia looked at the closed crack. On the other side, Antônio carried the sample and the forty days of custody. The two sealed portions in the guesthouse were losing preservation above them, in the house where no one would manage to reach them in time. Nael stopped digging. From the mud he took a flat stone, washed many times by the seepage. It bore a curved groove, deep as an old scar. He set it near the blue light and pointed to the opened channel. Ilva crouched. The stone had served as a guide for the pipe that came before the telemetry. The mining operation had buried the mark when it installed the optical sheathing. The water the panel attributed to Antônio's property came from a line dug before the bar received its first refrigerator, before the datacenter's cooling towers contested the Lajes with the houses. A leafcutter ant came out of a hole in the wall carrying half a dry leaf. Behind it came another, then a third. The mine's cut had left little living scrub above the corridor, and the ants came down to fetch what the slope no longer gave. They passed the stone without touching it. Célia brought her face to the terminal fixed to the duct. Her profile was still listed as a witness, though without individual authorship. The screen recognised her presence and offered a short statement, linked to Antônio's process. Ilva said that the line preceded the property. Célia repeated it, slowly, so that each word entered the record whole. The terminal asked who confirmed the course. Nael touched two fingers to the groove in the stone, then pointed to the ceiling, where the clay hid the direction of the old channel. He could not speak. The utility company would treat his silence as absence of testimony. Célia turned to Ilva. If his name went in, the visit would be invalidated. A temporary dependant did not confirm origin. If only hers went in, the newsroom would receive one more proof it could sell without her name. The screen shortened the deadline of the offer. Ten minutes. I know the size an omission acquires when it receives panel light. It fits in a line, then it takes up a house. Ilva took her hand from the wall and removed the flow sensor fixed to the duct, without breaking the cable. The piece stayed active, hanging over the shallow water. Beneath it appeared an old weld, thick, made with metal of uneven colours. Nael saw it and closed his eyes for a moment. He had guided men to that point when he was still paid by the metre of ground delivered. He took the marked stone and set it against the weld. The fit was exact. Célia's profile released the surface reading. The terminal projected the curve of the piece, the mineral date erased by the update of contracts, the continuity of the pipe to the area the utility company now called water compensation. The machine asked for Ilva's authentication to send the discrepancy. She offered her iris. The panel accepted the proof and removed from Antônio the immediate requirement to authorise the use of the channel. The debt of three meals remained. The preservation of the portions kept falling. In exchange, the utility company opened a territorial review and linked Nael to the origin of the line as a historical informant. Nael read his own name on the projection. Then he grabbed a dead root that came out of the wall and pulled. The earth gave way around his arm until it opened a low gap, wide enough for someone to pass sideways. On the other side, Antônio knocked once on the plate.
