CHAPTER 016 · PREVIEW

THE FEATHER ON THE CABLE

The buriti husk split on the intake grille, opening a white crack in the middle of the dry pulp. Edna removed it with the tip of the flow lens and saw, behind it, the thin beak of the slope Cantochoro. The bird Nael had named that way had been landing for three mornings on the same pipe, pecking at the rust and returning to the thin shade of the buritis. The pipe ran above the safety band, where the steam from the water carried to the crushing plant left a warm dampness on the whitewashed wall. There, winged ants came out of a crack in the adobe and climbed the exposed cabling, drawn by the blue light of the indicators. The Cantochoro hunted them one by one. When the swarm thickened, it went through the opening of the service cabinet and disappeared among the ducts. Edna lowered the lens. If he nests in there, said Nael, the fan pulls feathers inside. She looked at the field terminal Ilva had handed her. The declaration of provenance remained open over the pump's curve. Origin of the sequence. Link source. The sentence blinked without urgency, as if a person's suspension could wait for a bird's flight. The Cantochoro struck the inner plate. Once. Then again. The fan changed its noise, short and harsh. Edna went closer to the cabinet, but the swarm of ants came out of the opening and covered the back of her hand. She drew back, shaking her fingers in the air. Nael picked the buriti husk up from the ground and put it against the wall, near the crack. He waited. The ants came down the wood, carrying pale particles. The bird reappeared on top of the cabinet, with one wing spread too wide. There's a way out at the back, said Nael. When they put in those ducts, they closed off the gap from the old stove. Ilva followed him to the back of the building. Under the pipes, the wall kept a narrow mouth, an old smoke opening, now covered by a protective grille. The new cement had cracked around it. The tree planted before the mine still existed on the other side, a low buriti, its fronds split by the mineral dust. Its roots lifted the dry earth by the foundation. Nael pushed two fingers into the gap. The bird answered from inside, a short sound, repeated, that seemed to come from something smaller than its own throat. Edna brought the maintenance key clipped to the outside holder. She stopped in front of the grille. The copied routine was still active because the pump kept the pressure in the stolen interval. If she opened the compartment, the cabinet could cut the reading and demand a restart she was not authorised to perform. You know how to take it out, said Ilva. I know how to keep it running, Edna replied. The Cantochoro struck again. A feather fell through the ventilation opening and landed on Edna's cable. She looked at the feather, then at the terminal. The scar by her eyebrow closed as she read the question about origin. Nael moved away from the wall and picked up a flat stone from the ground. He did not lift the grille. He knocked three times on the cement beside the gap, measured, like someone calling a person who knows a way. The bird went silent. The ants went on coming out of the buriti husk. Ilva found, at the base of the pipe, an inspection plate covered in dust. It had no interface. It was a narrow cover, held by two old catches, left from the time when the intake still needed people to clear the steam. Nael pointed to the side where the root had not reached the metal. Edna released the first catch. The second resisted. The Cantochoro came out all at once, low, grazing the wall, and ended up in the buriti. It stayed motionless between two wounded fronds. Then it sang. The sound filled the yard where the pump had been filling everything. Edna closed the plate without tightening the catches all the way. A gap remained for the air and for the insects. The cabinet resumed its regular noise. On the terminal, the sequence kept running. She handed the device to Ilva. I'm not going to declare today, she said. The analysis expires. I'll keep it, said Ilva. Nael crushed the buriti husk with the sole of his sandal, scattering ants across the ground. The bird came down again, but stayed outside the cabinet. Later, the parallel ledger received the seven-litre difference, the gap left open in the wall and the origin kept blank by Edna. The Cantochoro did not enter the record. That morning, it had escaped the machine on its own.
